About How good is public transporation in Miami, FL

How good is public transporation in Miami, FL?
I will be traveling to Miami next month and want to know if it is necessary to rent a car for the week or if public transportation is good enough. My hotel is in South Beach, however, for half of the week I will be staying at a friends house. No car will be available to me if I don't rent one. Is the bus system, metro system, taxi service pretty good or is a car necessary? I found cars online to rent for $23 a day plus taxes and fees. Would public transportation be cheaper?
Miami - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Rent the car. Miami and the rest of Florida has lousy public transportation. The only decent public transportation in South Florida is the tri-rail, a north/south rail line. But is mostly for commuters.
Answer 2 :
It all depends on where your friend's house is & where you want to go. Miami-Dade has a pretty good public transport system in downtown Miami and on Miami Beach and along the South Dade Metro-Rail Busway route. You can get a 1 day "EZ-pass" for $5.00 that covers all rail & buses or a 5 day pass for $26.00. On South Beach a car is worse than useless. Anywhere other than the above or if you want to go anywhere else you will probably find a car more convenient. You should also know that there are so many "fees," "taxes" and "insurance" options loaded on to rental cars in So Fla. that you should get a firm quote on the total package cost BEFORE you are standing in front of the rental clerk initialing 3 or 4 paragraphs of unreadable 8 pt. type.
Answer 3 :
When I went to Miami, my family was able to get around pretty well by public transportation. We went to Miami twice and the first time, the only time we used a taxi was to get from Fort Lauterdale Airport to Downtown Miami and to get from Downtown Miami to Miami Airport to take the Tri-Rail to Fort Lauterdale Airport. The second time, when we flew into Miami, we only used a taxi to get from Downtown Miami to the Miami Airport, and that was because we were traveling at 3 AM. To put it simply, the public transportation is very good within Downtown Miami and on the Miami Beach island. In certain areas, however, the bus service is kind of sparse. However, those areas are generally far-off areas. Public transportation is much cheaper than a car. An unlimited daily pass costs $5, and a weekly pass costs $26. A monthly pass costs $100. The per-ride fare for the buses and MetroRail is $2, and $2.35 for express buses. The MetroMover in Downtown Miami is free. See where your friend lives. Like I said, unless he lives really far out of the way, he should be fairly easy to reach by public transportation

What are some great colleges with nursing programs in Miami,FL?

Answer 1 :
University of Miami and Barry University. UM is private so it'll be a billion times more expensive than Barry.
Answer 2 :
FIU (Florida International University) is a public university in Miami with a new medical school, but I'm not sure if they offer nursing. It is a great school, diverse student body and very affordable. Miami is a great place, have fun! Oh, you could also try Miami-Dade College. They most likely have a nursing program and are very affordable. MDC used to be a community college and converted to a four year school.
Answer 3 :
This website gives you information on all of the schools that offer nursing in Florida. www.allnursingschools.com/find/Florida/nursing-schools.php There are quite a few schools that offer nursing including public and private institutions, some of the best programs are in south Florida. If you have the money and are willing to spend it, the University of Miami , Nova Southeastern University and Barry University, are all private schools highly regarded in the medical and health-services field. While these schools may be expensive, you may qualify for financial aid or scholarships so that is definitely something to look into. Now if you want something cheaper you can always look towards Florida's public universities. In that regard I would say FIU, then FAU. After public universities your next option is community college. Many community colleges' have great nursing programs and they are often not given the credit they deserve. Also the cost is dramatically lower than what you will pay at university. Two of the best community colleges in Florida are in South Florida: Broward Community College- rated #1 in the country for nursing degrees awarded. ( I actually attended BCC, I loved it and the nursing program is highly regarded...plus Nova Southeastern is right across the road so if you decide you want to continue your education you can always transfer there.) Miami Dade College- rated #3 in the country for nursing degrees awarded. Great school, and just like BCC you will be in an area where nurses are in extremely high demand. The last option is schools like University of Phoenix and Kieser Career College. Now what I am about to say is purely MY opinion. I don't think these schools are very good. I am very weary of these schools and the education that they provide. But that is my opinion, and you should do more research on your own to help you decide if perhaps this is the right choice for you. Email me if you have any more questions, about nursing or housing or anything else : ) Good Luck!
Answer 4 :
Hi, I used "get-college" to get my college. With this program, you don't have to search for the right colleges. The right colleges will find you. It's very easy and FREE.They also provide financial aids.More than 6600 colleges are participiting in this program.Check it out here: http://tighturl.com/7j0

If you're going solo, flying would be competitive. After all, driving that distance would involve at least two overnight stops each way (assuming a round trip). With a family of three or more, you'd be better off driving.

About travel from orlando fl to miami via turnpike

travel from orlando fl to miami via turnpike?
i will be traveling to miami from orlando this weekend and i still haven't decided if i should take i-95 straight down, or take the turnpike, i know the turnpike is faster but i am concerned as to how much the tolls are going to be! i looked up the rates but they don't seem correct to me, so i want someone that has been there recently to know how much i would pay in tolls! i heard it was under $10, buwhen i look it up i get over $20! and when i look up the directions i get only 3 tolls in the way i am going, so over $20 seems way more than normal. i would appreciate the info please

Answer 1 :
Indeed FL Turnpike is expensive. Use the Toll Calculator below to get the exact rate based on your entry and exit locations. www.sunpass.com/tollCalculator For example, if you enter the Turnpike in downtown Orlando, and switch to I-95 at the Golden Glades interchange in Miami, your cash toll will be $16.20 (or $12.90 with SunPass). Taking I-95 all the way would make a slightly longer route, but it's free. Make sure you don't arrive in South FL during the rush hours, as I-95 gets very congested south of West Palm Beach.
Answer 2 :
You might check out the red coach bus. They sometimes have special cheap rates.
Answer 3 :
The Turnpike will be around $20 from I-4 in Orlando to Miami and as long as there isn't a major accident will be much quicker. If you want to take I-95 from Orlando, you have to either take Highway 50 (free) to I-95 or 408(toll) to 417(toll) to 528(toll) to get to I-95 and the cost of the tolls would be around $3. I personally make the drive often and always take the Turnpike. I do have a Sunpass (available at Publix, Walgreens, CVS, etc.) which gives me around a 25% discount. In my opinion the drive is safer and has the potential for fewer traffic hazards on the turnpike. Also, there is a rest area about every 45 minutes along the Turnpike for bathroom, food, and gas stops.
Answer 4 :
Whatever you decide, don't take 95 in the morning or afternoon. When I first moved there I made that mistake. I hit Ft Lauderdale around 4 PM. I didn't make Miami until about 7. In my opinion, the tolls are worth it. It's smooth driving the whole way

Get on petfinder and do a search for "small and furry" in your zip code. Lots of shelters, particularly in bigger cities and towns, have rats, hamsters, rabbits, ferrets, and other small critters available for adoption.
Answer 2 :

Yep, easy to navigate too...
Answer 2 :
In general, it's usually a pretty nice drive. However, in the afternoons between 3-5PM (especially this time of year), keep an eye out for pop-up thunderstorms. You'll be driving right along the ocean and when the wind shifts to bring the damp air over land, they can appear with very little advanced warning, dump a downpour for 15-30 minutes and then be gone again

I'm trying to travel from Miami to Tallahassee, FL by bus.?
I was wondering if people could give me their suggestions on bus lines. I've heard mixed stories about Greyhound and am looking for other options. Thanks!

Answer 1 :
I have traveled by Greyhound numerous times leaving from Fort Lauderdale which is about 25 minutes away from the Miami station. It takes about 9-10 hours to get there and the bus usually makes one major stop which you have to transfer buses in Orlando. If you ride at night most people are relaxed, calm, and/or sleeping so you have no one to bother you. Your bags are safe under the bus and they won't lose your stuff. I've rode the Greyhound Bus about 7 times so far and It has been a pleasant ride all of the times

Do i need a passport to travel from NYC to Miami, FL. If not, what would be considered valid identification?

New York City - 7 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
a driver's license.. you dont need a passport to travel inside the US
Answer 2 :
Hi, You might need a driver's license picture id that shows residence address, birthdate, medical card with picture
Answer 3 :
No passport required as long as your flight remains in the continental United States. So if it's a direct flight or only makes stops in the US you do not need passport. Acceptible forms of identification are a state issued driver's license with photo or state issued ID card. If you don't have either form of ID, call the airline or check the website and ask out what is acceptible ID. Sometimes a school ID card with photo is accepted.
Answer 4 :
All you need is a drivers license but if you are too young (or don't have one at all) then use your passport. I notice when I use mine to travel in the USA, I get thu security a bit faster. Since license are easier to fake than passport, they look at the license a little more to make sure its genuine
Answer 5 :
Any verifiable goverment issued id with a picture and your address will meet the Fed's requirements for id, which you are supposed to carry with you at all times, regardless of whether you're traveling or staying put at home. However, after talking to some friends, I have to add that if you are a foreign national, you will have fewer problems with officials while traveling if you use your passport as an id. Its something they all recognize. If you hand them a document they don't recognize, you'll increase the suspicion level, which means delays, hassles, etc. Its not just that licenses are easier to fake but also that they will have probably seen the US Customs stamps, but they might not even recognize the name of your province, state or even country.
Answer 6 :
I once forgot my ID at home. If you have anything with your name on it it will do. as long as its an official document. They walked me right to the gate!
Answer 7 :
No passport needed. A drivers license or state ID card can be used for ID
